Would The X-Files Be An Anachronism In The Obama Administration?

The “Christian Terrorists” and their ilk that bombed the Alfred P Murrah Federal Building seem to be the terror threat du jour for Clinton era TV series The X-Files, but is The X-Files just too anachronistic for the Obama administration?

 President Obama never seems to be plagued by “Christian Terrorism” for much of his tenure – unlike the Clinton administration and The X-Files who tackled the “Christian Terrorists” who brought us the Alfred P Murrah Federal Building bombing and other related treasons. But does the really austere fiscal environment of the Obama administration even make the salient political themes tackled in the TV series The X-Files seem hopefully too anachronistic by comparison?

Though there are a lot of “challenges” that the fictitious FBI agents Mulder and Scully missed to tackle that were de rigueur threat to “civil liberties enthusiasts” during the Dubya Bush administration before they signed off – i.e. rogue private security contractors, extraordinary renditions, etc. But will it spur on a reboot of The X-Files franchise probably by JJ Abrams?

Eight Reasons Why The X-Files Is Totally Unbelievable Back In The Mid 1990s

A lot of things may had happened since September 11, 2001 to dissuade the typical conspiracy nut but are there reasons why The X-Files was totally unbelievable during its heyday back in the mid 1990s?

A lot of stuff may had happened since the September 11, 2001 WTC Terror Attacks or the Bush administration’s Quixotic search of WMDs in Iraq that resulted in the deaths of over a million Iraqi citizens, but did you know that there could be eight – or more – reasons why Chris Carter’s iconic TV series The X-Files was, and still is, totally unbelievable during its heyday back in the mid 1990s? Check out the following reasons: 

It’s a TV show about US government employees who are competent, committed and hard-working! This alone is a red-flag for unbelievability. 

There have been scores of UFO sightings on the show, but not a single one was made by a drunken redneck in a pickup truck! Well, maybe its just because this was back in the days before affordable mobile phone cameras came into vogue. 

The character oft referred to as the “Cigarette-Smoking Man” never gets hassled, no matter where or when he lights up! Or maybe the “tobacco lobby” was just as powerful as the gun lobby as today back then. Ever wondered how much America’s tobacco companies donated to erect Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut? 

A “hot sexy babe” like agent Scully surely would have been singled out for “special” Clinton White house duty way before then President Clinton’s second term! Instead, then President Clinton has just have to settle with that “reasonably attractive” then White House intern named Monica Lewinsky. 

The government that’s supposedly behind some grand, secret project involving the DNA documentation and collection of everyone born since 1954 is the same government behind the IRS, Ronald Reagan era 600 US dollar hammers, the ATF Waco cult raid debacle and the Richard Jewell investigation! Well, most conspiracy buffs still don’t even know about explosive self-destruct buildings that are built into US government buildings. Maybe those scores of unbelievable conspiracy theories are yet to come.  

The series is in its fourth season, and the two attractive, single lead characters STILL haven’t hopped into the sack! Well, FBI agents Mulder and Scully eventually “hopped into the sack” during The X-Files’ finale, but it is not a hot, torrid sex scene circa 1990s era primetime TV that everyone hoped for. 

Anyone as obsessed as FBI agent Fox Mulder is with aliens and other crazy conspiracy theories would definitely rater be working for iconic movie director Oliver Stone or the iconic supermarket tabloid The Weekly World News, not the Feds! Or maybe Fox Mulder is one of the FBI’s “very special agents”. 

Back then, The X-Files was a FOX show that’s consistently in the Top 20! Quite a feat given that NBC had virtually monopolized the American primetime TV schedule block back in the mid 1990s.

A lot of us may have still something to add any post 9/11 factoid that only strengthens the air of unbelievability behind the aura of The X-Files. For those who do, please post them in here whether you believe the truth is out there or in here. 

Agents Mulder and Scully Versus Blackwater Security Consulting

Given that The X-Files TV series has ended a few weeks before the 2003 Operation Iraqi Freedom had begun, had FBI agents Mulder and Scully had tacked the “war crimes” committed by Blackwater Security Consulting?

Even though the famed FBI agents of Chris Carter's The X-Files TV series has managed to face off formidable foes during their tenure, like the people behind the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, those behind keeping recovered “alien” technology in Area 51 a well-kept secret among others had yet to face a more formidable contemporary foe. Namely Blackwater Security Consulting.

Even though the TV series ended a few weeks before Operation Iraqi Freedom got underway that was made famous by then President George W. Bush’s gigantic and rather premature “Mission Accomplished” sign, and the Abu Ghraib Prison Scandal. FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully never managed to investigate the alleged war crimes of Blackwater Security Consulting during the execution of their no-bid security contracts in post invasion Iraq where they managed from time to time fire indiscriminately at unarmed Iraqi civilians.

Ever since the security firm founded by former US Navy SEAL turned billionaire Erik Prince became embattled with their “alleged” excessive use of force, conspiracy buffs the world over have been clamouring for some over-achieving FBI agents to investigate the malfeasance at Blackwater. But are our beloved X-Files agents Mulder and Scully up to the task?

First of all, the malfeasantly run no-bid government contracts of Blackwater in Iraq doesn’t qualify as an X-File even though malfeasantly run no-bid government contracts tend to wind up in the FBI’s X-Files bin under the Bush administration. Secondly, given the almost unlimited power at their disposal, over-achieving FBI agents poking their noses where it doesn’t belong tend to get killed off rather expediently. If FBI agents Mulder and Scully investigated the malfeasance of Blackwater Security Consulting in Iraq, the two over-achieving FBI agents could later wind up as desiccated corpses in the desert region of the Iraq-Syria border. I wonder why the FOX Network didn’t end the X-Files that way?

What is the Secret of The X-Files’ Success?

For a TV series based on a concept with a very improbable mass appeal, what then is the secret of the success of The X-Files?

First released to an unsuspecting American public during the time when the Clinton Administration era economic prosperity finally trickled down to working-class America, it seems that it is very improbable that a TV series like The X-Files managed to gain not only critical acclaim but mass appeal as well. With a concept that – at the time of first release – seems to cater to a very tiny group of “conspiracy nuts” I often wondered; what really is the secret of The X-Files’ runaway success?

Maybe kids during those days had nothing else to latch on to after Kurt Cobain “permanently” quit Nirvana and most of them are not “adventurous” enough to riffle through the bins of independent record stores to discover the punk band Lunachicks - which makes it quite a probable reason the success of The X-Files after deciding that their lives back then are a lot more interesting than Friends or Melrose Place.

Maybe Chris Carter jumped the gun in proving that government conspiracies are a matter of fact. After all, The X-Files was already gaining mass appeal when everyone witnessed the US Government’s “less than truthful” investigation of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing of April 19, 1995 and the “conspiracy laden” TWA Flight 800 crash investigation. Even Sam Cohen – inventor of the Neutron Bomb – concludes that Timothy McVeigh’s truckload of ammonium nitrate won’t do that kind of damage to the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.

Maybe it was Chris Carter’s decision to portray the two FBI agents Fox Mülder and Dana Scully in a non-threatening platonic romance. Which is kind of weird really, when the two characters still haven’t “hopped into the sack yet” well into the TV series’ fourth season. Given that FBI agent Fox Mülder is an unabashed porno enthusiast. Surprisingly, this is the very reason why the women fan-base that I know of fell in love with The X-Files. Who am I to argue?

The Majestic 12 Documents: Wellspring of Chris Carter’s The X-Files?

Believed to be the definitive US Government documents proving the existence of a crashed extraterrestrial vehicle on US soil, is the Majestic 12 Documents the inspiration behind The X-Files?

Back in 1992, when the US Government finally began to accept that the Cold War is really over. Things that were thought impossible just five years before started to happen with alarming regularity, like the disestablishment of the US Strategic Air Command in June 1992. Not to mention Cold War era top secret operations being published in the New York Times, like the use of modified Boeing B-47 Stratojets as ad hoc reconnaissance aircraft to spy over Soviet airspace before the U-2 spy plane became operational. Given that the old Gray Lady was getting a lot of moolah for this. A then relatively obscure visionary by the name of Chris Carter tried to jump the gun in money making terms by using some of the leaked portions of the Majestic 12 Documents as the wellspring of creating his magnum opus that we now come to know as The X-Files. But what are the Majestic 12 Documents, and more importantly, do they serve as proof for the existence of a crashed extraterrestrial spacecraft supposedly capable of faster-than-light interstellar travel on American soil?

The Majestic 12 Documents are a set of documents purportedly supposed to document the existence of Majestic 12 – the purported code name of a secret committee of scientists, military leaders, and US Government officials, supposedly formed back in 1947 by an executive order of then US President Harry S Truman. The purpose of the committee was to investigate Unidentified Flying Object(s) / UFO activity in the aftermath of the Roswell, New Mexico incident of July 1947 and the sightings of “flying saucers” on the outskirts of Seattle, Washington on that same year. The Majestic 12 committee is an important part of the UFO conspiracy theory of a still on-going cover up of vital UFO information.

The existence of the Majestic 12 committee is sometimes associated with in some 1980s era UFO conspiracy literature with the more historically verifiable – but also deeply secretive – NSC 5412 / 2 Special Group created by then President Dwight D. Eisenhower back in 1954. The NSC 5412 / 2 Special Group – often referred simply as the special group – was initially a secret, but later became a public, subcommittee of the United States National Security Council responsible for coordinating US Government sanctioned covert operations. It was created as a part of the Planning Coordination Group by then President Eisenhower’s Presidential Directive 5412 / 1 on March 15, 1954. Nelson Rockefeller, the then Special Assistant to the President for Foreign Affairs, initially headed the group. A further directive – called the NSC 5412 / 2 – was issued later on December 28, 1954. Assigning responsibility for co-ordination of covert actions to the representatives of the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Defense, and the President respectively. The group continued to operate at least throughout the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, and a similar concept may exist under other names as part of the current US Executive Branch infrastructure.

Given that the vital information needed to finally either prove or disprove the existence of extraterrestrial spacecraft capable of faster-than-light interstellar travel crashing on US soil and being reverse-engineered by top scientist under tenure by the US Department of Defense is still a matter on national security. Information of such a sensitive nature is still not readily available to the general public in order to either prove or debunk the existence of these “UFOs”. Even the data concerning UFOs gathered by Number 10 Downing Street is deemed “too sensitive” that it is still classified Top Secret under the British Government’s Official Secrets Act. Maybe that famed computer hacker bloke named Gary McKinnon can shed light on this. But whatever each of us believes, The X-Files did manage to keep fans satisfied and Chris Carter very wealthy.

The X-Files: Truth in Mythmaking?

Born out of the general public’s misinterpretations of the redacted portions of the Majestic 12 Documents, The X-Files probably single-handedly created a myth that is as American as apple pie. Commendations for FBI agent's Mulder and Scully?

Do most people miss the good old days, those days back when where kids under 24 don’t give a proverbial rat’s posterior about the Majestic 12 Documents? Some fans of the TV series probably ascribe the “Roswell Incident” of July 1947 as the inspiration of The X-Files. Some say it’s those redacted portions of the Majestic 12 Documents. But just because the Majestic 12 Documents have earned an air of authenticity just because the then US president Harry S Truman signed them doesn’t mean that the particular document is the proverbial “Holy Grail” proving the existence of extraterrestrial biological entities and other related "Alien Conspiracies".

But maybe it’s more than that. Maybe The X-Files grew out of every liberal white Anglo-Saxon American’s weariness against the conservative extreme right. Or maybe the stifled attempts of questioning an ineffectual government, which at the time, the American people have grown tired about Washington’s denial about the truth behind the Gulf War Syndrome, Global Warming or other concerns were quasi-religious excuses were used to suppress the less-than-patriotic members of society. Or maybe it is just quite refreshing to see US Government employees - like FBI agents Fox Mulder (Or is it Mülder?) and Dana Scully - in their "overachieving" investigative antics - i.e. search for the truth no matter what it costs.

With the recent release of the latest X-Files movie – the last one was ten years ago by the way – the search for the truth had come full circle. Since there was growing proof – no by no means conclusive to us skeptics – stating that alien abduction memories are nothing more than victims of sexual abuse and / or organ theft victims “psychological defense mechanisms”. Or is that “coping mechanism”? The truth is out there all right, but whether the truth is to our liking or not is another story.
